You might have grown up with a medical degree in mind, or thinking you’d study maths or science. But whilst these are definitely the more ‘conventional’ choices, they’re certainly are not the most interesting!
As the demand for unique educational courses grows, there are original university courses popping up around the country for students who want something a little more niche and focussed from their studies.
Here’s part one of our findings… These are some of the wackiest and weirdest university courses on offer in the UK right now.
Stand-up comedy master’s degree – University of Kent
In this course, you’ll learn how to write and perform your own comedic material – preparing you for a career in comedy (with emphasis on stand-up). The course is made up of theory, workshops, performances and seminars – letting you truly polish your techniques and get those belly laughs. The course encourages regular performances in front of varied audiences too – so you’ll get plenty of experience!
Parapsychology – University of Edinburgh
If you want something ‘out of this world’ then studying Parapsychology might be for you. You might not have heard of Parapsychology, but it is the study of paranormal and psychic phenomena, including telepathy, precognition, clairvoyance, psychokinesis, near-death experiences, synchronicity, reincarnation, apparitional experiences, and other paranormal claims. Most mainstream science departments consider Parapsychology to be ‘nonsense’ but this course falls within the psychology department, and explores the human and mental element of it all.
Perfumery diploma – International Centre for Aroma Trade Studies, Plymouth University
This course and qualification is something that looks at all parts of the fragrance and perfumery industry. This course is much more than just smelling perfumes and deciding which you like best – you’ll learn how different scents work together, where different scents are sourced, how scents are sold and marketed, and much more.
Contemporary circus and physical performance – Bath Spa University
For people with unique physical talents, contemporary circus and physical performance is a chance to polish and define the way you use your body to communicate on stage. There are loads of different methods learnt on this course too, so even for experienced performers it’s a chance to expand their knowledge and skill set. It’s a course that lets you expand your portfolio, build industry contacts and fine-tune your creative style.
Puppetry design and performance – Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London
Puppetry is an incredible precise and skilled theatrical technique, and for those with an established interest – this course is an incredible way to leap forward with your skills and passion. You’ll study and learn alongside industry leaders and award-winning performers, and you’ll get the chance to perform, direct and produce shows.
